My Friend the Library: A Music Video

THE STORY

Texas bans more books than any other state in the country, and In Houston, many public school libraries have been shuttered by the governmental powers that be.

In spite of this dystopian future that we were confronting, my nonprofit wanted to do something positive and uplifting that showed the joy, wonder and necessity of libraries for kids. So we put out an open call for kids in Houston to write a song about the library means to them. One 11-year-old girl wrote the lyrics and melody to the song “My Friend the Library” and 11-year-old twins wrote and performed the rap in the middle. The music video was produced locally using local talent and it all was truly created by kids.

The music video is now part of a larger social impact project for kids everywhere to showcase what the library means to them through any art form.
